APG versus AVP

Finally back in L.A. after wrapping A PERFECT GETAWAY (henceforth, “APG”). Took 40 days to shoot it, including a couple in Jamaica to cover a critical sea cave sequence. After a 100% stage show like RIDDICK, I wanted to do something outdoors, maybe get to see things like, oh, “the sun” and “seasons.” So I got what I wished for, anyway, since APG wound up being 95% exteriors. I’d forgotten just how much the elements can fuck with you on a shoot like this — you get rain when you need sun, you get sun when you’re creating rain. I know, I know — “Just shoot the sun when you get it, DT, then shoot the real rain whenever you get that.” Well, it ain’t that easy, layfolk, what with actors’ schedules, location avails, and The Master Schedule that needs to be shown at least a modicum of respect.
This is my third week in the editing room. BTW, here’s a heads up for you novice directors: When you first see an editor’s assembly of your movie? Don’t put a .45 slug into your occipital lobe even when you want to. And you will want to. Because little-to-nothing will work in your movie without sound fx and music and a sense of pace. This ain’t a knock on editors; it’s just one of the immutable truths of the universe.
So I don’t watch the assembly. I just dive in on any damn scene I want, honing it, figuring out the VFX needs, trying music against picture, all the while cutting out the fat. And I just build the movie slowly like that. Because really, what’s the point of watching your movie before you can see it on the screen the way you saw it in your head when you shot the damn thing?
Now on to ALIEN VERSUS PREDATOR. Apparently there’s a petition floating around the internet that seeks to draft me as director of the next installment of the series. (It seems my old ALIEN 3 script figures into this master plan, too, in ways that aren’t entirely clear to me.) My reaction is “Hmm.” Flattering? Sure. Realistic? Not so much. See, if I’m going to spend a year of my life (and more if I write it) on the third installment of a science-fiction series, well, why wouldn’t I just do the third installment of my own science-fiction series?

I agree! It would be better to continue the Riddick series. It is more fresh than AvP and the story is not finished 😉

a pain to shoot for sure, but it really looks great on screen!

Give the men a break. David Twohy is the best Si-Fi director in this years and probably many years to come. Nobody can beat him at this field. However, he spend many years developing Riddick movies. He needed a rest. I’m totally in for any movie Twohy will direct. I will be the first one to buy tickets and watch his movies. Of course, I’m also dying to see another Si-Fi flick, but we must just be patient. David, I wish you the best, and… yea.. do some Si-Fi soon enough again plz 🙂 We all waiting for it!
Indeed, if you think about third Riddick, it would be a great thing 🙂 so i’m waiting for new adventures and i hope mr. Diesel agree to play.
Diesel has no choice 🙂 The director role is to extract from the actor his very the best potential. And so far, for Diesel, only David Twohy accomplished that. He do it with some much success, that I already think that Diesel was born to play Riddick role. His other character in other movies – so far – aren’t the greatest performances, and he knows it too. So, if Twohy will decide to do another Riddick, well… Diesel should be the first one to jump in on board 😀

Vin Diesel seems extraordinarily optimistic about the two RIDDICK sequels he’s planning with writer-director David Twohy. Here’s what Diesel told MTV Movies’ Shawn Adler:
“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film “Pitch Black.”

To be honest why not do both? You dont have the budget for riddick as you say, how you would like it. If I was in your shoes I would do avp 3 build up a good rep within the industry well enough to get a bigger budget for riddick. That way your baby isnt goin to the first day of kindergarden wearin a garbage bag as a raincoat. This being said i am a bigger fan of pitch black than of COR and the low budget might bring back the glory which was having it being more real to the character. Whatever you decide good luck.

Indeed – that would be fantastic! Please don’t kill off Vaako – I think he and Riddick would have a very interesting dynamic and would – paradoxically maybe, considering their completely different backgrounds and differences in character – make an extremely good team.
Three rules 🙂
1. Make it hard R-Rated (plz!!!)
2. No slow-motion fight with shaky cam (plz!!!)
3. At least 2.5 hour long 🙂
